community involvement

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

Knowing that so many organizations benefit from donations, salon owner and Oregon native, Meggan Dickson, chooses to use her business’ position in the public eye as a way to involve the community and to give to those organizations in a bigger way than a single person might be able to.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

In December 2019, w@sh sold raffle tickets for a Pureology luxury hair-care boxed set. While the winner was thrilled, the real winners are the recipients of the funds raised. All proceeds from ticket sales were donated to the Lifeline Food & Self-Help Project.

Our community serves a high percentage of students receiving free and reduced lunches. We also have a high number of students whose lunch accounts have been overextended. A basic human need is to have access to food. w@sh collected public donations, added to the ‘pot,’ and submitted funding to the Oregon School District to help wipe out lunch debts.

w@sh plays host to several raffles coordinated by our local Womxn in Business group- an Oregon area network of hard working femxle entrepreneurs led by w@sh owner, Meggan Dickson. Proceeds from the 2020 Christmas Raffle were donated to the Lifeline Food Pantry.

SUPPORTING THE ARTS

The arts cultivate passion, calm, discipline and creation. It breaks our hearts to think of kids missing out on the opportunity to strum a guitar because lessons are not in the budget.

Aireloom Music was a local music lair where people of all ages can pick up their instrument of choice. Aireloom also had a scholarship fund to make the dream of music lessons become reality - w@sh was a proud sponsor!

When our local high school sought to upgrade their theater seating in 2024, w@sh didn’t hesitate to sponsor the project. Have you seen a theater production at OJSHS? Enjoy your new comfy seat and think of w@sh!

SPREADING THE LOVE THROUGH SELF CARE

Valentine’s Day seemed like a good day to spread the love! w@sh dolls donated their time & skills to the Dixon PADS Homeless Shelter, providing beautiful cuts and styles to female residents. PADS was also the recipient of salon Rx shampoo, donated through w@sh’s “Look Good, Feel Good” campaign in 2019 + 2020. Clients purchased salon-brand bottles of shampoo at cost to be donated on Mother’s Day!

w@sh-hosted Womxn in Business Christmas Raffle raised funds in 2021 with all proceeds donated to the Dixon PADS Shelter.

The ever-popular w@sh Braid Bars raised money on several occasions. We enjoyed connecting with locals while creating fun styles, and in turn, their dollars went toward local charities, such as the 2021 “w@sh + c(hair)ity” event raising funds donated to HOPE of Rochelle.

BRAIN CANDY

Donation Alert! Local bookstore, the Scarlet Page (run by proprietress, Jennifer Grygiel), received boxfuls of books donated by w@sh. Searching for a good read? SHOP LOCAL, visit the Scarlet Page inside of Conover Square. They’ve got a wide selections of books for young to young-at-heart.

Remember the joy of visiting the Scholastic Book Fair as a kid? WE DO. It stings to know some families can’t swing this shopping opportunity, so - you guessed it - w@sh made a donation to the 2024 Scholastic Scholarship Fund at Oregon Elementary School to provide a book for middle-school aged kids who wanted to shop. Every kid deserves this experience.

BLM MARCH

From babies to war veterans- we came together to support the 2020 Black Lives Matter March, which was organized by our local youth (including a former w@sh intern!). Sit on that for a minute. A small group of local, diverse youth organized a SUCCESSFUL peaceful protest and our community came together to vocalize injustice AND kept the peace. So proud of our community.

EYES ON THE FUTURE

Over the last 3 years you’ve probably noticed interns coming and going from w@sh - they’re students from our high school’s Transitions class. “OJSHS Works” provides job sampling by partnering with local businesses to give students a firsthand experience with employment within the community. w@sh puts them to work with tasks like folding laundry & sweeping.

Students spend first semester operating a school store and performing on-campus custodial tasks and service projects. OJSHS Works job sampling raises the stakes by generalizing work skills to authentic work settings.
